I spotted this new Suzuki Swift concept due to be displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show 2009 on my travels of the internet. Although lots of manufacturers are jumping onto the electric/hybrid bandwagon, I have a soft spot for Suzuki having had two of their cars myself.
Suzuki have chosen the method of removing the mechanical link between the engine and the wheels by having the engine directly charge the lithium-ion batteries instead. For those not in the know, mechanical transmissions sap a lot of power between what is produced by the engine and what reaches the wheels. The idea of removing the mechanical link isn't just limited to cars - the British Navy's new Type 45 destroyers also feature electric propulsion, powered by gas turbines. The little Suzuki is powered by something a bit more humble though - a 658cc petrol engine, most likely out of one of Suzuki's Kei-class cars.

Whilst I like the idea of the alternative drivetrain, I also really like the concept's seats. Whilst they look rather skeletal in comparison to conventional seats, I have no doubt that they would be just as comfortable whilst weighing significantly less. The only thing that would bug me is the lack of side bolsters - but considering this isn't a sports car, I might be asking too much...
